I started listening to Green Day six years ago in the seventh grade. My then best friend first introduced me to their music. Blah blah blah, typical fell in love with music story, “saved my life”, blah blah whatever whatever. So anyways, I’ve known for awhile that I wanted to get a Green Day-influenced tattoo. I didn’t want anything generic. I knew that I wanted my tattoo to be personal and that the only way to accomplish that was to design my tattoo myself. I played around with varying concepts and visuals for about a year, but decided that whatever I get should somehow incorporate the heart grenade, which I find to be simple, but still very bold and iconic. I still continued to play around with size, location, and concept, and had settled on the heart grenade on my ankle with lyrics from “Are We The Waiting” running along the side of my foot. I still had some issues with it, but it was the idea that I had liked the most. However, when photos of the pieces from the Art of Rock show, which featured commissions of art based on songs from 21st Century Breakdown, I completely revamped my whole idea. Borrowing from two of the pieces and incorporating other stylistic influences, I created my draft drawing. My drawing looked pretty shitty, but I loved the concept. A dove, usually representative of peacefulness, holds the pin to the heart grenade in its beak, ready to fly away, instead representing a sense of fragility and sudden chaos. The choice to X the dove’s eye is a more pessimistic idea, reflective of the downspiral of our world today, a concept also found in the album 21st Century Breakdown. The three “lucky stars” are the same size and color, and they represent each member of the band.

Nonchalantly reposting my tattoo because my blog has only consisted of Marvel, Tom Hiddleston, and Mika recently and I feel guilty for ignoring my babies. It’s been almost 2 years since I got it done.
